West Ham Park is managed by the City of London, and that fact governs a Newham sitting more than the acreage does. Ground kept to that standard carries mown grass, clipped hedging and formal beds, so the tone behind a head stays even instead of breaking into scrub and bright gaps. A face holds against it without the eye being tugged away to some pale patch past the shoulder. The trade is that formal planting pushes strong block colour into the frame from late spring, and colour behind a sitter reflects onto skin. By May the leaves have shut over and those same footpaths turn to dappled shade, which is the worst light there is for skin: hard bright discs across one cheek beside deep shadow, and no edit recovers it. Through summer the open grass early on, or the hour before dusk, becomes the ground to use, while full midday sun in July is the one condition we would move a booking to avoid. Clothing follows from all of that. Olive, sage and mid green vanish into hedge and grass, so a sitter wearing them reads as a head above a body shaped blur. Warmer mid tones separate cleanly against the same background, and one layer that comes off gives a second look without a second location.
