Primrose Hill decides most of what a portrait in Camden can look like, and the reason is the gradient rather than the view. On a slope the photographer controls the background by moving a few steps up or down. Stand below the sitter and the ground falls out of the frame, leaving sky behind the head, which is the cleanest backdrop available here and costs nothing to arrange. Work from above them and the city sits behind instead, but the skyline is a long way off and registers as texture rather than detail, so it serves better as a soft band than as a subject. The hill's other property is that it is open. There is no canopy, which means no shade to retreat into when the sun is high, and light arriving from overhead drops the eyes into shadow and hardens the line of the nose. The workable hours are the ones at either end of the day, when low sun crosses the slope sideways and models a face instead of flattening it. Cloud is not the problem people assume it is: an even grey sky over open ground behaves like a very large softbox and holds detail that midday sun destroys. Wind is the genuine variable, because an exposed hill has nothing to break it, so long hair and loose fabric will move and are worth planning around rather than fighting. For clothing, mid tones keep their shape against both sky and grass, while white tends to merge into bright cloud and black closes up and loses its folds.
