We work at the dog's eye level, which means kneeling or lying down for most of the session, and in short bursts with breaks, because a bored dog stops offering anything.
Nervous and older animals are photographed on the lead, close to their person, and the lead is taken out in the edit. We take the first slot of the day where we can, before the ground fills with other dogs. The set is then edited for coat detail rather than brightened flat.

Camden is an inner London borough, and for a dog session that single fact sets the terms. There are roads on every approach and, around the market, a density of people and noise that an anxious animal will not simply get used to within an hour. A dog that is settled in a quiet park can be a different creature in a crowd, and if yours is one of those the sensible plan is the grass at the foot of Primrose Hill early, before the day fills up, where nothing arrives unannounced. Primrose Hill suits a confident dog for one reason: it is open, so a loose animal stays in sight the whole time and never vanishes into scrub. The trade-off is that open also means unshaded, and a hill has to be climbed. On a warm day a thick-coated dog will pant, and a panting dog photographs as a strained dog, so overcast is the better forecast and the early hours are the better slot. For an older animal the gradient is the whole question. Stiff hips and a long climb do not belong together, and the flat ground at the base offers the same sky and the same grass without asking anything of the dog.
