Forty minutes to an hour, run at the animal's pace rather than the clock's, and finished the moment it stops being fun for the dog. A tired animal photographs as a tired animal, and no edit repairs that afterwards.
We work low, on a longer lens where recall is uncertain, and on a trailing line anywhere near a road. The line comes out at the edit. You get the set in colour, plus monochrome on the frames where a dark coat carries better without it.

We recently did a family photoshoot with our 8 months old daughter, and it was such a lovely experience. Kaushik was brilliant with her, so patient and playful, and he managed to get so many genuine smiles from her, which made a huge difference. He made us feel really comfortable throughout the shoot and never rushed us.
We had a family photo session with grandparents, parents sons and our dog too. Mr Bathia is good humoured, he got the best out of all of us and took some great photos.
He was very professional, made us relaxed and got everyone to smile. The photos were beautiful especially the family portrait.

Anxious animals are never cornered or restrained for the sake of a picture. If a frame requires holding the dog still, that frame is not worth having. We always focus on the nearer eye. A sharp nose with blurred eyes behind it is the commonest mistake in phone pictures of pets.
You can be in the pictures with your pet, or stay just out of shot keeping them settled. Collars and leads can be edited out afterwards, so your dog never needs to be let off somewhere unsafe, such as near the traffic on Upper Street.

Between forty minutes and an hour, and the animal ends it rather than the clock. A dog that has walked in through Islington traffic needs the first ten minutes to come back down before anything is worth keeping, so that time is built in rather than photographed through. Older dogs get less of it, held in one spot, with the camera doing the moving instead of the dog.

Angel station, which has the longest escalators on the London Underground, sits at the busy end of Upper Street, so a nervous dog is usually better photographed away from it. For a dog that prefers quieter ground, Caledonian Park offers woodland and meadows around its Grade II* listed clock tower.

Where a dog is photographed from decides what ends up behind it, and in a borough this built up that matters more than usual. Drop the camera to a terrier's own height on a street and the background fills with road and railings, a dark and busy field for a dark animal to vanish into. Drop lower still and the background becomes sky, which is worse, since the brightest thing available sitting behind the darkest thing in the frame turns a black coat into an outline with no fur inside it. The background that works for a dark dog is neither, it is a mid tone, and on Highbury Fields that means shooting flat across the grass from far enough back that the far side of the space fills the frame behind the animal. Long grass creates the opposite trouble and it only bites small dogs. Anything below knee height loses its legs and feet in it completely, so a terrier or a dachshund goes on a path or on short turf, standing rather than sitting. Traffic decides the opening rather than the pictures. A dog walked in beside moving cars is already near the top of its range, and nothing made in the ten minutes after that arrival is worth keeping, so we walk before we work. Days when the Emirates Stadium is in use are worth swerving entirely for an anxious animal. Cats and house rabbits are photographed indoors. Old dogs are worked in one place, with the camera doing the moving instead of the animal.
