Angel sits on the Northern line and Highbury and Islington station carries the Victoria line and the Overground, so hardly anybody drives to a headshot in this borough. People walk in off a platform, usually wedged between two other things they had to do that day, and that is a physical fact with a photographic consequence. Somebody who has just come up out of a tube arrives warm, with colour sitting high on the cheeks and across the forehead, and a camera reads that as redness long before the eye does. It settles, but it takes longer than anyone expects. So the running order gets built backwards. Wardrobe, background tone, lamp height and any trouble with glasses all get solved while the face returns to normal, and the frames that matter get made late in the hour instead of early in it. Glasses deserve naming, because nobody thinks to mention them. A soft source reflects in a lens as a bright rectangle sitting precisely where an eye should be, and the cure is geometry rather than editing: the light goes higher and further round, or the frames get tipped forward at the ear by two or three degrees. The other pattern here is that one picture has to serve two masters, a company listing and something the person controls themselves. Both come out of a single lighting setup, with only the crop and the background tone changing between them, because two different lightings of one face read on a screen as two different people.
