Westminster station carries the Jubilee, District and Circle lines, and their worth to a sitting lies not in the speed of any one journey but in the fact that a headshot can be arranged around a day that is already committed, instead of the day being rearranged around the sitting. Sittings happen in your own office, or under our lights out at Northwood, and in this borough the first is what tends to get booked, because the obstacle is almost never the photograph. It is the travelling at either end of it. The unusual thing about a working population built around national government is who eventually holds the picture. Elsewhere a headshot is made for one employer and stays with that employer. Here a photograph gets passed on: it goes out attached to a statement, somebody writing about the organisation lifts it, and it turns up years later beside a name in company the sitter was never asked to approve. That has two consequences for how one is made. The first concerns retouching. A face that will be seen behind a lectern next week cannot be smoothed into a different face this week, so we remove what would have gone by itself inside a fortnight and leave everything that would not. The second concerns the crop. Since other people will cut the file down to their own layout, we make it at more than one width while the lights are up, so the close version already exists as a photograph rather than being carved out of the wide one by a stranger with a mouse.
