Kensington and Chelsea is residential before it is commercial, so headshots here tend to be booked by individuals rather than by an office manager working down a list, and they happen at the sitter's own address. That makes the room the entire problem. Georgian townhouses were built tall, and ceiling height is the most valuable thing a room can hand a headshot. A light that can go well above the eyeline and point down at the angle daylight actually comes from produces a picture nobody reads as lit, whereas the same light in a low room has to sit level with the head, and level light immediately looks like equipment. Depth is the second thing. A deep room lets the sitter stand well clear of the wall behind, which is what turns a domestic wall into an unremarkable tone instead of a shelf of objects every viewer will inspect. Between them, height and depth settle more than any decision taken afterwards. Neither is a compromise. They are different tools, and the room decides which one is in hand. Height buys one further thing worth knowing about, which is somewhere to hide the light outside the frame when the floor area is small, and that is why a tall narrow box room will often beat the wide living room everybody assumes is the obvious choice.
