Every ritual has its own weight, from the turmeric of the vatna and the red and ivory of the choora to the palla joining you through the laavan and the rice thrown as the doli leaves, whether from a gurdwara or a reception venue in the borough. At a packed Sikh reception, whether in a hall the size of Chelsea Old Town Hall's Main Hall, which seats up to 338, or somewhere smaller, we work close and quick through the crowd and the noise to find the picture. A reception in the royal borough may follow a gurdwara ceremony elsewhere, which puts a crossing in the middle of the day. Inside the darbar hall nothing changes: shoes off, head covered, seated at the side, the Guru Granth Sahib never framed from above, and the four laavan covered without a step through the sangat. Holland Park suits the couple before the doli leaves, and the Kyoto Garden rewards patience.

Milni is outdoors, on arrival, and the sky that morning is not negotiable, a succession of short embraces between pairs who will not hold a pose. We work it side on, at a distance that keeps both faces readable, and we take the sky we are given instead of flattening the greeting with flash. Arrival is also the last stretch in which the party is still assembling itself, which earns a frame or two before formality closes over everything.
Inside, the constraints are not ours to negotiate. We stay below seated eye level, we never cross the aisle, and the palla makes the couple one moving shape rather than two. A patterned floor throws its own colour upward onto skin, and that is corrected in the file afterwards rather than argued with in the room. The laavan repeat four times, so every pass earns a different vantage. Langar gets photographed least and deserves it most, which strikes us as the wrong way round.
