Everyone sits down on it, so we work from down there too, and our lenses end up level with the congregation rather than above anyone. Stand up in that room and you become the tallest object between it and what it came for.
An evening reception is a different animal entirely, because it is a room you are allowed to change. That makes it plannable in a way the morning never is: lights can go up before guests arrive, and the only fixed obstacle is wherever the power sits, since that decides where the DJ builds and therefore which wall the dancing turns its back on. Ask the reception venue where the sockets are. Ask the gurdwara, separately, where photographers may stand.

The anand karaj, round by round
Mehndi and jago fill the evenings beforehand, both lit by a single ceiling fitting with plenty of movement under it. The baraat arrives to noise and to milni, which is embrace after embrace in a queue: from the side you collect shoulders, from the end you collect faces, with no repeat performance on offer. Then the hall itself, where an anand karaj is no kind of performance and must never be covered as though it were.
The Guru Granth Sahib fixes the orientation of everything else in that hall, so nothing we make may treat it as scenery. The palla is handed over once and quickly. Four laavan follow, and because each round returns the couple to where they began, what actually changes between rounds is the family sitting behind them; the middle two circuits therefore belong to the room, not to the couple. Langar is unhurried and worth the time. The doli ends it, outdoors, usually in bad light and always in a hurry.
