Sikh weddings from Stanmore: two rooms, two sets of rules

Two rooms, and negotiation is possible in one of them only. A committee runs the building where the ceremony happens, so the layout is settled, the seating is settled, and so is the spot a camera may work from. Booking a photographer changes not one of those. We ask early, we accept whatever answer arrives, and what we can cover follows from the answer rather than from our preferences.

Everything reverses in the evening room. A table can be shifted, a door propped, a colour-changing wash switched off for ten minutes so a portrait comes back untinted. Hardly any couple thinks to ask, and those who do gain better photographs for free. Work out beforehand which of the evening's set pieces you care about most, since that determines our position when the lights drop, and a position chosen late is a position chosen badly.

Etiquette about heads and feet is the easy half; every guest manages it unprompted. The genuine constraint is that one position is offered, and it is yours for the whole ceremony, so whatever is framed at the outset is what you have for the duration. We pick a line holding the couple, the musicians, and some of the sangat behind them, since forty minutes cropped tight on two people yields forty near-copies of one photograph.

Four passes are walked and on a contact sheet they look the same. So vary what can be varied: the reading that precedes each one, the palla held between them, a face two rows back, the return to the seat. Ceremonial authority in that hall rests with the scripture rather than with anyone on their feet, which is precisely what fixes the ground a camera is allowed. Understanding the constraint matters far more than naming it.
