Commercial work in a leafy suburb happens mostly in rooms nobody designed with a camera in mind. In a suburb the rooms run to a domestic scale: one window in one wall, a ceiling low enough to bounce off, and overhead fittings burning at a colour temperature nothing like the window's. Left as found, a room like that hands back a face lit green down one cheek and blue down the other, and a white shirt that changes colour across its own collar. More daylight is not the remedy. We turn the ceiling off, put light of our own in, and demote the window to a supporting part, which corrects colour and direction together. Bentley Priory sets the register the town reads in. An eighteenth century estate that served as the headquarters of RAF Fighter Command through the Battle of Britain is not a casual backdrop, and businesses trading in a place with that history do better with pictures that look deliberately made than with pictures that look grabbed. That is a lighting decision far more than a styling one. One visit takes the team, the rooms and the work itself while the stands are already standing, which is the only economical order to do it in. For a team, each person goes in the same spot at the same distance and every setting is written down, so somebody who starts in March joins the row later without the row needing to be rebuilt around them.
