Commercial work in Ruislip is suburban work: shops and consulting rooms along the parades, professional firms upstairs, trades running out of small units, and around the Manor Farm village core a set of businesses occupying buildings far older than anything they do inside them. That last group sets the lighting problem, and it is always the same problem. An old building tends to have glass in one wall and none in the others, so somebody standing three paces into the room is already well under on whichever side of the face is turned away from it, while whatever is bolted to the ceiling glows an entirely different colour. Adding more of either makes it worse. We turn off what is fitted, carry in our own, and treat the wall behind and the person in front as two separate jobs, which settles the colour argument in a couple of minutes. A shop or a treatment room is worked through outside trading hours or in a lull, the empty interiors are taken first while the place is still straight, and the people are fitted in afterwards in whatever order the day allows. Staff here arrive from several directions along the Uxbridge branch and are seldom all present together, so a team page usually gets assembled over more than one visit. We write down the lamp heights, the lens and the background tone from the first session, so that somebody hired in October can be matched to a colleague taken in May.
