The parade around Field End Road is the local commercial subject, and small parade units share one lighting problem. A shop with a single glazed frontage takes all of its daylight from one wall, and everything more than a few paces back is lit by whatever hangs in the ceiling. The two sources do not match in colour, so a frame holding both the window end and the rear of the unit runs cool at the front and green or amber behind it, and no white balance setting fixes both at once. The practical answer is to kill one source rather than reconcile two: light to match the shopfront, or shut the front off and light the whole interior ourselves. Narrow frontage is the second constraint. Inside a unit shaped like that there is often no standing position that gets the counter, the stock and a person into one frame without a very wide lens, and wide lenses bend a face at the edges. Shooting across the corner, or working from the doorway with the door held open, solves more than reaching for more focal length does. Timing follows trade rather than daylight. Interiors are being lit by us anyway, so the hour to book is the one when nobody is buying, which for a shopping parade means before opening rather than over lunch. Staff portraits are the exception. Those want an identical setup for every person in the business, which means one visit, one place to stand, and one background for everybody.
