Eastcote House Gardens is where most sittings here begin, and the restored walled section is the part that needs a decision rather than a default. Walls do two useful things. They cut the wind, so hair and light clothing behave, and the warm brick throws a soft second light back at anyone standing close to it. They also take away distance. Inside an enclosure there is a limit to how far back the camera can go, which rules out the long lens look that compresses features and lifts a face clear of what is behind it. Where that separation is the whole point of the picture, the open green outside the walls gives it and the enclosure cannot. Season decides which half we use. Low winter sun barely clears the walls, so the enclosed ground sits in shade for much of a short day and what light arrives is cold and even, which is kind but flat. From late spring the same walls hold the sun in and the enclosure becomes the brighter option, with midsummer midday the one slot worth avoiding outright, because overhead sun hollows the eye sockets and heated brick reflects colour as well as warmth. Clothing follows the brick. A red brown wall will fight anything terracotta, rust or orange, and a face already carrying a warm cast from bounced brick has nothing left to give. Mid blues, deep greens, charcoal and off white all hold their own against that background and keep the warmest thing in the picture where it belongs, which is the skin.
