A sitting takes around an hour, and a fair share of it goes on walking from one position to the next, not standing still in one place. We show you pictures throughout, so nothing about the outcome is held back until later.
Afterwards there is a gallery of edited pictures, big enough for a decent print and a version sized to send. Retouching stays light: a blemish, a crease, a bright patch pulling the eye. Nothing that changes what you actually look like.

What we offer
Portrait sittings in Barham Park, timed for hours when the borders read as tone rather than tangle.
One sitter or two, roughly an hour, frames reviewed on screen with you before we stop.
Northwood studio sittings for winter afternoons, high wind, and ground too wet to stand about on.
Local and experienced
Direction is given in small pieces, one instruction at a time, because a list of five adjustments at once is how a sitter ends up looking like a shop mannequin. Twenty-five years of sittings say the good frame usually arrives about two thirds of the way through, once the self consciousness has worn off and the shoulders have dropped.
Albums are designed around a sequence rather than a collection, so a graduation or a couple sitting reads as a short story instead of a pile of prints. Individual, couple and group portraits can all be arranged, either in a single session or across a few setups.

Good to know
Certainly. Many portrait sessions mix individual images with a few couple or group shots, and it is easy to fold that into the time. Just let us know in advance who will be there, so we can plan the lighting and looks to suit everyone. We cover Sudbury and nearby Sudbury Hill, Perivale and North Wembley.
Yes, absolutely. Beyond the digital files, we offer beautiful prints, framed portraits, canvases and hand-finished albums, all crafted to a high standard. Whether you are in Sudbury or further afield, a portrait on the wall or an album in hand lets you enjoy the images for years to come.
Because the plan exists before we meet. In Sudbury that means Barham Park, the sitter placed several paces clear of the borders so the background actually softens, and a start in the first or last hours of daylight rather than midday. If the wind gets up we work the planted sections, which hold still. If the day is hopeless the Northwood studio holds the sitting instead, at no extra arrangement.
It depends on the type of session and what you would like afterwards, from digital images alone to prints, frames, canvases and albums. Tell us what you have in mind, whether that is a personal-branding set or a graduation portrait, and we will put together a clear quote. For Sudbury bookings, getting here is simple: Sudbury Town station on the Uxbridge branch of the Piccadilly line.
Yes, please bring a few. A handful of outfit changes brings real variety to your Sudbury portraits, and there is time set aside for them within the sitting. We are glad to advise ahead on what photographs well, and how colours and styles react to the studio lighting.

Barham Park was a private estate before it was a public one, and that inheritance decides how a sitting there has to be composed. Estate planting was laid out to be walked past within arm's reach, so the borders and shrubs sit tight against the path edge. Anything two paces behind a sitter stays nearly as sharp as the face however wide the lens is opened, and the answer is not a wider aperture. It is distance. Bring the sitter three or four paces clear of the planting, photograph from further back, and the background drops away by itself. Summer adds a second problem. Heavy foliage bounces a green cast up onto the underside of the jaw, and it is stubborn to correct because it lands on skin and leaves clothing alone. Turning the sitter so that open path or paving fills from the front cancels most of it. From November those same borders are bare, and bare shrub against a bright sky reads as tangle instead of tone, so winter sittings work off evergreen and built edges. That is a change of plan rather than a change of mood. Clothing follows from all of it: warm neutrals ahead of cool ones, one tone ahead of pattern, and nothing green between May and September. On a windy day the planted sections stay still when open ground will not, which matters more for hair than most people allow for when they pick a date.
