Sessions run about an hour, which is long enough for the pictures and short enough for a three-year-old. We work in bursts, leave gaps for snacks and distraction, and stop when the children are finished rather than when a schedule says so.
Everyone in the group gets the same gallery, so nobody has to ask for copies. Files come at print resolution and in a smaller size for email, colour throughout, with mono alternatives on the frames that suit them.

We had our family portraits done many years ago with Kaushik Bathia and we loved them so we have now returned again this time with new additions to the family. On all the occasions we went Kaushik Bathia has taken care of everyone and made everyone laugh and smile especially the children in order to get the best photos.
…The gentleman took my family and I last minute for a photoshoot. Although we were running extremely late as we had a newborn, he waited patiently for us. He initially said he could only do 30 minutes because we were late but he ended up spending the entire hour and some minutes making sure we had the best photos.

Wall portraits from a family session are printed large enough to read from across a room, because a group of six shrinks very badly at small sizes. We can photograph groups from three people to around twenty-five, and for a bigger gathering we would plan the arrangement with you beforehand.

- Origins of Sudbury. Sudbury sits on the western border of Brent just west of Wembley; its name, first recorded in 1273-4, means 'the southern manor', and Sudbury Manor was the Archbishops of Canterbury's main Middlesex residence until the late 14th century. 1
- Barham House and Barham Park. Titus Barham, son of Express Dairy founder Sir George Barham, left Barham House and its grounds to Wembley Borough Council in 1937; the house was demolished in 1956-7, but Crabs House survived to become Barham Park Library. 2
- Sudbury Court Open Space on Pasture Road (HA0 3JL) is a small hilltop park within the mock-Tudor Sudbury Court Estate, known locally as The Pimple, with original hedges and mature oak trees. 3
- Horsenden Hill summit. Horsenden Hill rises to 85 m, its Iron Age settlement was declared a scheduled monument in 1978, and the summit has views to Harrow on the Hill and Wembley Stadium, with the Grand Union Canal along its south and east sides. 4

Everybody is photographed together right at the beginning, while the newborn is settled and the older ones still find the whole business interesting, then the siblings by themselves. A garden is a small thing beside a field, and for family work that is the whole advantage of Barham Park. Every position worth using sits close to the last one, so a grandparent covers very little ground across an hour and a pushchair is never far from where it was left. It also means a child who breaks into a run is still in the frame ten seconds later, so the sensible move is to stop policing them. Small children photograph badly while they are being organised and well while they are busy, and a garden is contained enough to let them be busy without anybody chasing. The group shot, the one that has to include every last person, gets made inside the opening quarter hour before novelty runs out, and looser pictures come after it. The light under mature planting needs one rule: stand properly inside the shade rather than on its edge. The edge of a tree's shadow lays a hard line across a cheek that looks like an accident, while three paces further in the light is even across every face at once. Between November and February the case for outdoors gets thin, because the usable light is finished early in the afternoon and cold hands stop small children cooperating long before their patience does. The Northwood studio is warm and it is lit by us, so a feed halfway through costs nothing except the ten minutes it takes.
