Nobody is told to smile on cue. The frames that work come out of movement: a hand held, a child carried, somebody laughing at somebody else, and the walk between spots produces more of them than any arrangement does.
Heavy rain moves the booking rather than forcing cold children through it, which is a swap and not a loss to anybody. The edited set arrives afterwards in a private gallery, sized both for prints on a wall and for sending to relatives who could not be there on the day.

I would highly recommend Northwood Hills Studio. We have been been capturing our favourite family portraits since 2004. Always great fun, yet very professional. The printed results are great and we will keep coming back.
We recently did a family photoshoot with our 8 months old daughter, and it was such a lovely experience. Kaushik was brilliant with her, so patient and playful, and he managed to get so many genuine smiles from her, which made a huge difference. He made us feel really comfortable throughout the shoot and never rushed us.
Having had Mr Bathia to do our family studio photos with our first child, we again went for him second time round with our second child 5 years later. He is extremely good in getting our girls attention to capture lovely photos. He is a great photographer and would definitely recommend him.

Around an hour, whether we are in the studio or out in Headstone Manor Park, and never hurried. Babies and toddlers get time for feeds, naps and cuddles, and outdoors the Moat Café in the park is handy for a break. Your children decide the pace here, not a stopwatch.
Let us know as soon as you can, even on the morning itself. Small children get ill and have off days, and we would much rather move the session than photograph a child who is out of sorts. We then pick a new date together, and a session in Headstone Manor Park can move just as easily as one in the studio.
Yes. Most are made late on, when standing about in the cold has limited appeal, so we keep them short and near home: Headstone Manor Recreation Ground for open grass and a walk of only a few minutes, or the Northwood studio when the weather rules that out. Bring a second outfit, since changing is easier indoors than at the edge of a field.
It marks a first birthday: your one-year-old is given a cake to prod, squash and taste while we photograph. The pictures follow the whole thing, from the first wary poke to the frosting on the eyebrows. It is a messy, cheerful session, set up in the studio so the cake can go everywhere.
Of course you can. A well-behaved dog is very welcome, and the perimeter footpath in Headstone Manor Park gives it room for a walk between pictures. Tell us beforehand and we will plan the shots so everyone, on two legs or four, stays settled; in Harrow's parks, dogs need to be kept under control and cleared up after under the borough's Public Spaces Protection Order.

For family work here, Headstone Manor Recreation Ground is a sensible place to start, and the reason is the ground itself rather than the view. A recreation ground is mown, level and open, which is the surface a pram crosses without a fight and the surface an unsteady walker will risk. Level ground also lets everybody stand at roughly one height, so a group of eight need not be arranged up a slope to keep faces on a single plane, which is the thing that quietly ruins most large family pictures. Small children set the length of a session, not us. Most give their sharpest attention early and then begin negotiating, so the picture that matters, everybody together and looking one way, is made near the start rather than saved for the end. What follows is better when nobody is being arranged at all: children running, an adult carrying somebody, the walk back towards the gate. Grass takes a long while to dry after heavy rain, and a session on soaked ground with a toddler is not worth attempting. Winter light over open ground goes early in the afternoon as well. Both of those are the argument for the Northwood studio, reached directly on the Metropolitan line: warm, dry, no wind, nothing at knee height to run at, and a plain backdrop that puts every bit of attention on faces. Newborns and very small babies belong there for the same reasons, with the added one that a room can be made hot enough for a baby to sleep in.

Our Northwood studio, close to North Harrow
Our studio is at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU, a few minutes' drive from North Harrow, with Northwood Hills as the nearest Metropolitan line station. Family sittings are booked ahead, and printing, framing, restoration and scanning all happen in the building. Opening hours are Mon to Sat 10:30 to 18:00, Sun 13:00 to 18:00.
