Family work here almost always begins at Headstone Manor Recreation Ground, and the reason is the ground itself rather than the view. A recreation ground is mown, level and open, which is the surface a pram crosses without a fight and the surface an unsteady walker will risk. Level ground also lets everybody stand at roughly one height, so a group of eight need not be arranged up a slope to keep faces on a single plane, which is the thing that quietly ruins most large family pictures. Small children set the length of a session, not us. Most give their sharpest attention early and then begin negotiating, so the picture that matters, everybody together and looking one way, is made near the start rather than saved for the end. Both of those are the argument for the Northwood studio, reached directly on the Metropolitan line: warm, dry, no wind, nothing at knee height to run at, and a plain backdrop that puts every bit of attention on faces. Newborns and very small babies belong there for the same reasons, with the added one that a room can be made hot enough for a baby to sleep in.
