North Harrow went up mostly in one stretch between the wars, and a suburb laid out to a single pattern repeats itself. For a portrait that is a difficulty rather than a gift, because the frontage behind a sitter in one road looks much like the frontage in the next, and the picture ends up saying suburb and very little else. Two settings answer that, and they answer it in opposite ways. Headstone Manor Recreation Ground offers open sky, which is a large soft source, kind to most faces and tolerant of a wide spread of hours, though it also hands you a pale backdrop that light hair and light clothing sink into. The manor is medieval and moated, so its walls carry an irregularity of tone that nothing built between the wars can offer; set a sitter several paces clear of them and the background breaks up into dark and light instead of sitting flat behind the head. Season decides more than weather does. Low winter sun arrives under the level of the eye and models a face properly, so a bright afternoon in January is worth taking seriously rather than postponing. From late spring the sun is overhead by mid day, the eye sockets go dark, and the honest answer is to start early or wait for the last hour. Clothing follows whichever ground we settle on: mid tones against grass, something lighter against old walls, and nothing with a pattern fine enough to fight the brickwork.

Visiting the studio from North Harrow
The studio sits at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU, a short drive up from North Harrow. Booked portrait sittings happen there, alongside family and headshot sessions, and in-house printing, framing, restoration and digitising. Our doors are open 10:30 to 18:00 from Monday to Saturday, and 13:00 to 18:00 on Sundays.
