North Harrow went up mostly in one stretch between the wars, and a suburb laid out to a single pattern repeats itself. For a portrait that is a difficulty rather than a gift, because the frontage behind a sitter in one road looks much like the frontage in the next, and the picture ends up saying suburb and very little else. Two settings answer that, and they answer it in opposite ways.
