Hillingdon sits on the western edge of the capital, and for a portrait that single piece of geography matters more than anything else about the borough. Nothing tall stands between Hillingdon Court Park and the western horizon, so the last light of the day arrives low and unbroken instead of being cut off early by a wall of buildings. The practical effect is a longer run of usable evening light than an inner borough gives you, and it is the reason a sitting here is better booked for the end of the afternoon than fitted around lunch. Overhead sun does the opposite. It drops the eyes into shadow, hardens the line of the nose, and open parkland offers nothing to soften it with. Season decides how the park gets used rather than whether it gets used. With the trees bare, the ground beneath them is as bright as the open grass and a sitting can be worked almost anywhere across it. Once the canopy fills in, the same ground goes patchy, and leaf-broken light is far harder to correct than plain shade, so from May onward we keep to open ground and use the treeline as a backdrop rather than standing under it. Clothing follows from the background. Grass and a grey sky occupy a narrow band of tone, and anything sitting inside that band sinks into it. Solid mid-blue, deep red, cream and charcoal all separate cleanly. Small patterns break up at any distance, and olive or sage disappears into the park altogether.
