Graduation and personal portraits in Hayes

We photograph portraits throughout Hayes and take in Yeading, Harlington and Hayes End on the same terms, either outdoors in the grounds at Barra Hall Park or indoors at Northwood when the background has to be controlled. Sittings get booked here for all the ordinary reasons: a birthday, a graduation, a parent who has never once been photographed properly, somebody who simply needs one good picture of themselves.

Every sitting is shot at two distances. A head and shoulders close enough to read the eyes, and a wider frame with the ground and the light around you left in. They are different pictures of the same person, and people rarely pick the one they arrived expecting to pick. You leave with both.

What we offer

Portrait photography in Hayes

01

Digital Gallery

Portrait sittings in the grounds at Barra Hall Park or indoors at Northwood, shot at two distances, both delivered.

02

Prints & Frames

The final two hours of light are booked first here, so name your date earlier than feels necessary.

03

Graduation Portraits

Grey days work. Even light needs no waiting and yields a usable hour rather than a usable twenty minutes.

Local and experienced

Relaxed direction, professional lighting

A sitting runs to roughly ninety minutes and much of that is not photography. We walk the ground first, choose the spot for the light that day, and make the opening frames as throwaways so nobody has to be any good immediately.

You see the back of the camera during, not after, so anything failing gets fixed while fixing it is still possible. Afterwards you receive an edited set sized for print, plus a lighter set for screens, and your chosen frames retouched properly rather than smoothed.

Good to know

Portrait Photographer in Hayes, FAQs

Either. In Hayes most portrait sittings are done outdoors at Barra Hall Park, where we meet you at the gate and walk to whichever ground the light suits that day. If you would sooner be indoors, our room is at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6. We also photograph at your home, which suits anyone who does not travel easily.

Set aside ninety minutes. Roughly twenty of those go on walking the ground and settling down, the rest is photography, and the last stretch is usually the best of it because by then nobody is thinking about the camera. One person alone can finish sooner. Add half an hour for outfit changes, or for more than three of you.

Indoors, paper rolls in three tones, one light, one mid, one nearly black, lit through a single large softened source placed close in, which is what keeps skin looking like skin. Outdoors in Hayes the backdrop is whatever Barra Hall Park offers on the day: the brick of the hall, the open lawns, or the planting. Our own light travels either way.

Most people say this, and it is usually true for about five minutes. We open with frames meant to be thrown away, keep you moving instead of posed, and hand you something to hold or lean against so your hands have a job. Nobody is asked to hold a smile, and the pictures that work arrive half a second after you stop trying.

The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6. For a Hayes portrait it matters less than you would think, since the grounds at Barra Hall Park handle most sittings and we travel to you. Our room earns its keep when the weather has closed in, when the background has to be plain, or when a sitting needs light we dictate rather than wait for.

Barra Hall Park is the ground a Hayes sitting is usually built around, though the house does more work in the frame than the park does. Barra Hall is Grade II listed, and a listed brick front behaves in a photograph like a wall of warm mid tone: it holds detail, it does not blow out, and it sits far enough behind someone standing a few strides off to fall soft while still reading as somewhere. What it will not do is put any light back into a face. Brick absorbs. Grass and pale path throw a little back upwards. So the method is to keep the building in frame and the subject out on the open ground in front of it, close enough that the facade fills the background and far enough that the lawn is doing the filling. Wardrobe follows from the same brick. Warm reds, rust and orange land within a shade of that wall and a person wearing them merges into it. Anything cool separates cleanly: deep green, navy, charcoal, slate. Cream is the one exception worth risking, because it lifts against the darker mortar rather than competing with the brick itself. Time of day decides more than season does. The grounds are open, so at midday the light arrives straight down and drops the eye sockets into shadow, and that is not something correction repairs afterwards. The final two hours before dusk are the ones to book. A flat grey afternoon is the second choice and a better one than most expect, since it does the same job without waiting for the sun.
