Two buildings, and the problems they set are unrelated. A gurdwara will not be adjusted to suit a photographer; it is not a set, and nobody ever intended it as one. The floor holds the congregation, the sangat occupies whatever space we might otherwise have wanted, and the position permitted to us is off at one side. All the thinking therefore happens days beforehand: which wall admits the light, where kneeling keeps us clear of everybody's path, and which lens reaches you from that corner.

Mehndi and jago arrive first, and they are family photographs made in rooms nobody ever lit for the purpose. Milni happens standing, in whatever a car park allows, and it will not hold still, so we open right up and let the crowd sit inside the frame. Then a morning baraat, which offers the single window where everybody is outside and pointed one way. None of it comes round twice.
Indoors the four laavan govern the tempo of an anand karaj. You stand, walk the circuit, sit again, and it is the palla that fuses two figures into a single shape. Langar comes afterwards and is the most honest hour anywhere in the week. Doli we take without asking a soul to look up. Where we may stand is no preference of ours to hold: it is set by the sangat, by the proportions of a darbar hall, and finally by Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
