That is why we pick the spot for how it will read at the fourth circuit rather than the first, and why we would rather stand somewhere merely adequate all morning than somewhere excellent for ten minutes. A long lens handles the palla from there, and the ragis besides.

Everything else across the day is ordinary photography under unusual constraints. A milni happens in a crush, at head height, with relatives on both sides taking each other's measure as they embrace, and it finishes long before anybody has found a seat. The jago beforehand is dark, loud and entirely candid, which suits it. Langar is the calmest hour of them all, and the pictures it produces are often the ones nobody thought to ask for; we work from outside the serving line and never inside it.
