Southall has an Elizabeth line station, and the part of that which matters to a headshot is not the run into town but the run back out of it. Our room at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 is not on that line, so we will say plainly whether the trip is worth making. For one person who wants a plain backdrop and nothing else in the picture, it usually is. For two or more it is not, because the same lights fit in the boot of a car, and a room you already sit in every day becomes the studio for an afternoon. The craft point here concerns what sits above the face. If you wear a turban, mention it while we are arranging the sitting, because it changes the lighting before it changes anything else. The cloth raises the crown by several inches, so a lamp set at the height that suits a bare head puts its brightest patch on fabric and leaves the eyes underlit. The key light has to rise, and the framing rises with it. A strongly coloured turban also drops its own colour onto the forehead, and the answer to that is to change the angle it is lit from, not to chase the tint in the edit. A full dark beard behaves the same way. The face is never the difficulty. The difficulty is that beard, jacket and backdrop can run together into one dark mass with a pair of eyes floating in it, and the cure is a background a stop brighter, not more light thrown at the skin.
