Dog and cat photography in Southall

Pet sessions are photographed where the animal lives, which across Southall usually means a garden, a kitchen or a favourite chair. Osterley, Yeading and Greenford fall inside the same round, and Osterley Park is there for dogs that want more ground than a garden offers. Two animals in one household count as a single booking, provided they can be in the same space without argument.

One piece of craft we insist on: an owner's hands stay in some of the frames. A hand on the collar steadies a fidgety animal, gives the picture scale, and looks like the relationship the pictures are actually about. Rabbits, cats and dogs get the same treatment here.

Twenty-five years behind the lens

A safe pair of hands in Southall

Sessions are kept deliberately short, because an animal gives its best early and nothing improves after that. We arrive, let the animal get bored of us, then work. Treats are yours to supply. With an anxious animal the opening stretch is spent paying it no attention at all, camera down by our knees, which settles most of them faster than coaxing.

You look at pictures on the spot, which matters with animals because it decides whether one more idea is worth trying. Finished frames come back cleaned of leads and clutter where the frame is otherwise right.

Pet Photographer in Southall, FAQs

Both, though in Southall outdoors wins most of the time, either in the garden you already have or out on the parkland at Osterley Park, where a dog has room to move. Cats, rabbits and other indoor animals stay put and get photographed indoors, in the spot where nothing startles them. The Northwood room is for a plain studio backdrop, usually a show or breed requirement.

The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6. For pet work in Southall it rarely comes into it, since we go to the animal instead of asking a nervous dog to make a car journey to a strange room. The exception is a formal plain-background picture, which needs the room and the lights we keep there.

Of course. Photographing several pets from one household is something we do often, together and separately. Mixed groups of cats and dogs are very welcome, and we patiently wait to get everyone facing the right way at once. Bringing a helper for each animal makes things smoother. Outdoors in Southall we would head for Osterley Park, a National Trust estate with parkland near Southall.

It is the booking we would most encourage. An old dog with sore joints is photographed on its own bed and its own floor, with no stairs, no fetching and no standing about. We work low, keep the whole thing to twenty minutes or so, and stop early if that is what the animal wants. Grey muzzles photograph beautifully in soft window light.

Yes. Nobody transports a horse for a photograph, so we come to the yard where it is kept. That shapes everything: the session is fitted round turnout and feeding instead of round the light, and the surface and lighting of the yard decide what is possible. A dark horse wants the first hour of light or the last. Handlers are welcome in frame.

In a suburb of this size most pet work happens at the address where the animal lives, and in Southall that usually means a back garden, which is a better room than it sounds. It is enclosed, so a lead can come off with no traffic anywhere near, and that fact alone produces more usable frames than an hour of anxious handling on a verge. What a garden does set is a geometry problem. The fence stands two or three paces behind the dog and no lens will dissolve it at that range, so we work along the diagonal instead, camera in one corner and the animal at the far one. That buys several extra paces and turns a fence into a soft band rather than a row of planks. Where there is a choice, keep the animal in light and the fence in shadow. A sunlit fence behind a shaded dog is the one arrangement no amount of care afterwards will fix. Osterley Park is the option when a dog wants ground to cover, and on an estate we plan on the assumption that the lead stays clipped. That is less of a handicap than it looks. A lead held short with the handler left in the picture instead of cropped away reads as a walk rather than a restraint, and it is honest about how the dog actually lives. Old animals and anxious ones are done indoors on their own floor, camera low, session finished the moment interest runs out. Cats and rabbits follow the same rule: photograph them where they already sleep, and work around them.
