Two things shape commercial photography in Southall. The first is that this is a long-established Punjabi and wider South Asian community, and a business here often puts out its material in English and in Punjabi. That is a photographic constraint before it is a design one. Two blocks of type need more clear area than one, and the clear area has to fall on a quiet part of the picture rather than across a shelf of stock. So we frame looser than the finished crop, keep one side of every set-up empty, and make an upright version of anything likely to end up on a poster or a phone, because a wide picture cropped tall loses precisely the room the second language wanted. The second is the premises. A unit with a glazed front is lit from one end only. The first few metres are bright, the far end gets whatever the ceiling gives it, and the two are rarely the same colour, so a photograph taken down the length of the room ends up with warm faces at one end and grey ones at the other. We light the dark half ourselves and match what we add to the daylight instead of fighting it. Team pictures are made in a single visit where the diary allows, against one backdrop, with every setting noted. Somebody photographed six months later can then be added to the line-up without the page looking patched together, which is why the notes get taken at all.
