We are as at ease in a small community temple as in a five-hundred-cover banqueting suite, throughout Hayes, Hanwell and Norwood Green and the rest of Greater London. At a Sikh wedding the exchange of garlands and the palla placed in the couple's hands begin the Anand Karaj, and we follow from the very first hymn.

We are calm and unhurried, gathering the whole story without ever getting in the way. During the pooja and the fire ceremony we work from the edges with longer lenses, keeping the priest, the flames and the vows undisturbed. The reception is its own event, so we cover the speeches, the entrance and the dancing with the same care we brought to the morning rituals.

Southall is a large west London suburb long nicknamed Little Punjab for its established Punjabi and wider South Asian community. Southall station on the Elizabeth line, one of the few stations in England with bilingual English and Punjabi signage. For pre-wedding and couple portraits, we love spots such as Osterley Park, a National Trust estate with parkland near Southall, with Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha on Havelock Road, one of the largest Sikh gurdwaras in Europe close by for a striking backdrop.

The vows at a nikah end in the joyful declaration that the couple are married, and the room's relief and delight are ours to keep. We are mindful of every family's customs at the ceremony, and photograph them exactly as they happen. The blessings of the elders close many ceremonies, and we capture them with warmth.

The haldi or pithi is full of colour and play, and often holds the warmest, most natural moments. The pre-wedding events are often where the most natural photographs come from, and we give them full attention. The groom may arrive on horseback, by car or on foot, and whichever way he comes, we are ready for the procession and the dancing around him.
