Every Ritual, Every Day, Photographed Across Gants Hill

Gants Hill is a north-east London area with a strong South Asian community. Couples come to us from across London and the surrounding area, and Ilford, Newbury Park and Barkingside are firmly on our patch. Around the sacred fire, the seven steps of the saptapadi bind a Hindu couple together, and we photograph each vow from close enough to feel its weight.

We arrive knowing the difference between a Gujarati pithi and a Punjabi maiyan, so nobody has to stop and explain their own traditions to us on the day. For the vidaai we hold back and let the emotion be what it is, photographing the goodbyes gently rather than crowding a moment that belongs to the family. For the jaimala and the joota chupai we stay close to the fun, because these lighter rituals carry as much of the family's character as the solemn ones.

We travel throughout Greater London for temple, gurdwara and mosque ceremonies, and Gants Hill, a north-east London area with a strong South Asian community, is one we know well. Gants Hill is a largely residential district of Ilford in the London Borough of Redbridge with a strong South Asian community. Gants Hill tube station on the Central line's Hainault loop, with its ticket hall beneath the Gants Hill roundabout. For portraits away from the celebration, Valentines Park, a large park with formal gardens and a lake between Gants Hill and Ilford works beautifully, and Valentines Mansion, a restored Georgian house set in Valentines Park adds a real sense of place.

The most sacred parts of the day are captured from a respectful distance with a quiet long lens. Whatever your family keeps, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Gujarati or Tamil, we follow the ritual closely and respectfully.

When the baraat sets off, the dhol drives the dancing and the groom moves slowly forward amid his family, and we are in the thick of every joyful step.
