Hackney Town Hall on Mare Street is a Grade II listed art deco civic building, designed by Lanchester & Lodge and opened in 1937, and it is still a working town hall. Couples can marry in two quite different ways here. The Lanchester Suite is the council's own small ceremony room, booked with the registrars for one inclusive fee. The refurbished Civic Floor, with the Council Chamber, the Committee Rooms, the Assembly Hall and the glass-roofed atria, is hired through Hackney Venues for larger ceremonies and receptions, with registrars booked and paid separately.

Our studio is at 21 Joel St, Northwood Hills HA6 1NU, photographing weddings since 2001 and rated 4.8 out of 5 from 580+ Google reviews. We are glad to photograph at Hackney Town Hall, and coverage starts from £750. Below is what the council and Hackney Venues publish, and what they do not.

What a Hackney Town Hall wedding costs in 2026 and 2027

The two routes are priced differently. The Lanchester Suite fee includes room hire and two registrars, and Hackney publishes it by financial year (registrars' fees):

  • 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027: £325 on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, £405 on a Saturday.
  • 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2028: £335 on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, £415 on a Saturday.

For the Civic Floor rooms, the registrars' fee is charged on top of venue hire. For an approved venue it is £635 Monday to Friday, £695 on a Saturday and £785 on a Sunday or bank holiday in 2026 to 2027, rising to £655, £715 and £805 in 2027 to 2028. Each of you also pays a notice fee (£46.50 each for weekday notice in 2026 to 2027), and a £100 booking fee is non-refundable. The certificate is extra at £12.50.

Hackney Venues does not publish its room hire prices for the Council Chamber, Committee Rooms, Assembly Rooms or atria; you receive a proposal after emailing your date and timings (FAQs). What is published is how payment works. A ceremony-only booking is paid in full once the contract is signed. Larger events take a non-refundable 33% deposit, with the balance and a £1,000 damage deposit invoiced at least 42 days before and due 28 days before the event. No damage deposit is charged for a 50-minute ceremony-only booking (terms). Hire includes furniture, setup, cleaning and an event coordinator; AV is extra.

The Lanchester Suite or the Civic Floor: two ways to marry here

The Lanchester Suite is booked directly with the council's ceremonies team, not through Hackney Venues (Town Hall ceremonies). The limit is 30 people, and that figure includes your two witnesses, any children and your photographer or videographer; extra guests are not let in. The layout cannot be changed. You must arrive on time, because guests are admitted together and late guests are not admitted. Guests wait while you meet the registrar beforehand.

On the Civic Floor, Hackney Venues describes the Council Chamber and Committee Rooms as settings for stand-alone ceremonies (Hackney Town Hall page). The council's process is to check availability and cost with Hackney Venues, make a provisional booking, then book the registrars separately (approved premises). Ask how far ahead they book. At the Town Hall, ceremonies on Fridays and Saturdays start on the half hour. A ceremony hire lasts 50 minutes with a 10-minute turnaround after it, and flowers and musicians have to set up in the 15 minutes before your start (FAQs).

For a reception, catering must come from the accredited list. That list names Laguna (Indian), Saffron Culture (Asian) and Pride of Asia (Asian with a focus on halal food), and says all accredited caterers can provide vegetarian and vegan food (accredited caterers). Hot food and alcohol need a professional caterer with waiting staff, and only one caterer may serve food per event. Using a non-accredited caterer adds a £550 + VAT kitchen buyout fee (terms).

Hackney Venues does not publish whether a mandap, a nikah or other religious ceremony can be held in the Civic Floor rooms, or whether a baraat with dhol can arrive on Mare Street. Ask the events team in writing.

Confetti off the steps, no candles: Hackney's rules for the day

Neither the council nor Hackney Venues publishes a photography policy for ceremonies. The Hackney Venues terms say ceremony bookings include help with "photography management and confetti moment organisation", and in the Lanchester Suite your photographer counts towards the 30-person limit (terms).

Photography during the ceremonyNot published; ask the registrar on the day
Own photographerAllowed in practice: the Lanchester Suite limit of 30 explicitly includes your photographer
FlashNot published
DronesNot published
ConfettiOutside only. Not on the Town Hall steps; biodegradable confetti at the bottom of the steps. Natural dried petals only, no rice, no confetti cannons. The FAQ allows fresh petals but the terms exclude fresh rose petals, so check
Candles and open flameNo open flames or candles, and no helium balloons, because of the high ceilings
Noise93 dB limit in the venue, 85 dB in the North and South Atria; no amplification in the atria before 5pm on weekdays
Finish timeNot published. Music and alcohol stop 30 minutes before the licensed cut-off
DecorationsApproved by your coordinator; nothing fixed to walls or furniture; set up and cleared within your hire time

Where a rule is shown as not published, ask the venue in writing before the day.

Getting ready for a Mare Street ceremony

Neither the council nor Hackney Venues lists a getting-ready room at Hackney Town Hall. For a Lanchester Suite ceremony, plan to arrive ready and on time with all your guests, since late arrivals are not admitted (Town Hall ceremonies). For a Civic Floor booking, set-up access is for you and your suppliers only, and the hire window must include set-up and breakdown (terms), so if you want a room to dress in, ask for it to be added to the hire. Most couples will get ready at home or nearby and travel in; that is a good point for preparation photographs before the ceremony slot.

Planning photographs at Hackney Town Hall

  • The building's own features are the backdrop: the original Assembly Hall with its two curved staircases, the wood-panelled Council Chamber, and the two glass-roofed atria (Hackney Town Hall page).
  • The curved staircases suit a full-length portrait and a group arranged on the steps.
  • The glass roofs over the atria bring daylight in, which helps for indoor family groups on a grey day.
  • The council's confetti rule moves the confetti shot to the bottom of the front steps, with the art deco frontage behind you; plan where guests will stand before you come out.
  • With 50-minute ceremony slots and other couples following, group photographs inside are quick. A clear list of family groups saves time.
  • Candles are not allowed, so evening table details rely on the room lighting and any lighting your decorator has agreed with the coordinator.

Lanchester & Lodge's 1937 town hall

Hackney Venues describes the Town Hall as a civic art deco building designed by Lanchester & Lodge and opened in 1937. It is Grade II listed and remains a working town hall. Recent works added two glass-roofed atria and modernised the 1930s building, while keeping the original Assembly Hall with its two curved staircases and the wood-panelled Council Chamber (Hackney Town Hall page). The rooms are wheelchair friendly, according to the same page.

Hackney Central, London Fields and Mare Street

Hackney Town Hall is on Mare Street, E8 1EA, a short walk from Hackney Central and London Fields stations (Hackney Town Hall page). The Registration Service itself is at the Hackney Service Centre, 1 Hillman Street, E8 1DY, which is where notice appointments are held. We travel to Hackney from our Northwood Hills studio; any travel cost is set out in your written quote.

Parking at Hackney Town Hall: none for guests

There is no guest parking at any Hackney Venues site. The Town Hall has four supplier bays for larger events, blue badge parking must be arranged with your coordinator in advance, and the FAQ points to a pay-and-display car park on Wilmer Place (FAQs). Tell guests to come by train or bus, and give your photographer and florist the supplier bay details.

Hackney Town Hall wedding photography, frequently asked questions

How much is a wedding at Hackney Town Hall?

In the Lanchester Suite, one fee covers the room and two registrars: £325 on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday and £405 on a Saturday from April 2026 to March 2027, then £335 and £415 from April 2027. For the larger Civic Floor rooms you pay Hackney Venues for the room and the council separately for registrars, which is £635 on a weekday, £695 on a Saturday and £785 on a Sunday or bank holiday in 2026 to 2027. Hackney Venues does not publish its room prices. Notice fees and the £12.50 certificate are extra.

How many guests can you have at Hackney Town Hall?

The Lanchester Suite takes 30 people, and that count includes your witnesses, children and your photographer. The Council Chamber seats 100 with a 49-seat viewing gallery, and the Committee Rooms take 100 theatre style. For a reception, the full Assembly Rooms hold 500 standing, 420 theatre style or 250 for a banquet with dancing, and each atrium holds 200 standing or 100 for a banquet.

What is the Lanchester Suite at Hackney Town Hall?

It is the council's smaller, more affordable ceremony room, booked directly with the Registration Service for one fee that includes room hire and two registrars. The layout is fixed, the limit is 30 people, and guests are admitted together, so anyone who is late will not get in. You book your notice appointment at the same time as the ceremony date.

Can you throw confetti at Hackney Town Hall?

Yes, but not on the Town Hall steps. The council allows biodegradable confetti at the bottom of the steps. Hackney Venues allows confetti outside only, made of natural dried petals or plant-based material, with no rice and no confetti cannons. Its FAQ mentions fresh petals, but its terms exclude fresh rose petals, so confirm what you are bringing with your coordinator.

Can we have an Indian or Asian caterer at Hackney Town Hall?

Hackney Venues' accredited list includes Laguna for Indian food, Saffron Culture for Asian food and Pride of Asia, which focuses on halal food. All accredited caterers can provide vegetarian and vegan menus. Only accredited caterers are normally permitted; using another caterer adds a £550 + VAT kitchen buyout and administration fee. Whether religious ceremonies can be held in the rooms is not published, so ask.

Is there parking at Hackney Town Hall?

No. There is no guest parking. The Town Hall has four supplier bays for larger events, blue badge parking has to be arranged in advance with your coordinator, and the nearest public option named by Hackney Venues is the pay-and-display car park on Wilmer Place. Hackney Central and London Fields stations are a short walk away.

Can we bring our own photographer to Hackney Town Hall?

Yes. The council's Lanchester Suite rules count your photographer or videographer within the 30-person limit, and Hackney Venues' terms say ceremony bookings include help with photography management and the confetti moment. No separate photography policy is published, so check with the registrar on the day about photographs during the ceremony itself.
