Clissold House is an eighteenth-century mansion in Clissold Park, Stoke Newington, run by Hackney Council and hired out for weddings through Hackney Venues. The council renovated it in 2011 as part of an £8.9 million Heritage Lottery Fund restoration of the park, and it is licensed for civil marriages and civil partnerships. The Drawing Room, the Dining Room and the adjoining Hallway are set up for a ceremony followed by a seated dinner or a standing reception, and there is an outdoor front terrace.

What a Clissold House wedding costs: registrar fees and deposits
Hackney Venues does not publish room hire prices for Clissold House; you email your date, details and timings and receive a proposal that doubles as the contract (FAQs). What is published is the registrars' fee, which is paid to Hackney Council separately from venue hire (registrars' fees):
- 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027: £635 Monday to Friday, £695 on a Saturday, £785 on a Sunday or bank holiday.
- 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2028: £655 Monday to Friday, £715 on a Saturday, £805 on a Sunday or bank holiday.
On top of that, each of you pays a notice fee (£46.50 each for weekday notice in 2026 to 2027), a £100 booking fee is non-refundable, and the certificate is £12.50.
A 50-minute ceremony-only booking is paid in full once the signed contract is back, and carries no damage deposit. A larger event takes a non-refundable 33% deposit, with the balance and a £500 damage deposit invoiced at least 42 days before and due 28 days before (terms). Hire includes furniture, setup, cleaning and an event coordinator. AV, tablecloths and catering are extra, and using a caterer who is not on the accredited list adds a £550 + VAT kitchen buyout fee.
Booking a ceremony at Clissold House
Hackney Council lists Clissold House among its own approved premises, alongside Hackney Town Hall (approved premises). The process is to check availability and cost with Hackney Venues, make a provisional booking, then use the council's ceremony booking form to book the registrars. Each ceremony is led by two registrars, and the ceremonies team takes bookings up to 15 months ahead (FAQs).
At Clissold House, ceremonies start on the hour. A ceremony hire lasts 50 minutes, with a 10-minute buffer for the room to be reset, and flowers and musicians must be set up in the 15 minutes before your start. The Hackney Venues page suggests the Drawing Room, Dining Room and adjoining Hallway for a ceremony followed by a seated dinner or standing reception (Clissold House page). The Drawing Room is the largest room at 60 seated. A late licence and exclusive use are both available on request.
For a reception, catering and the bar must come from the accredited list, which names Laguna for Indian food, Saffron Culture for Asian food and Pride of Asia, which focuses on halal food; all accredited caterers can provide vegetarian and vegan menus (accredited caterers). A wedding cake can come from your own supplier on a minimum hire booking, but not for a 50-minute stand-alone ceremony (terms).
Hackney Venues does not publish whether a mandap, a nikah or other religious ceremony can be held at Clissold House, or whether a baraat can come through the park. With a 60-seat main room, it suits a smaller civil ceremony and reception; ask the events team in writing about anything else.
Petals outside, no candles: Clissold House rules for the day
Hackney Venues publishes no photography policy for Clissold House. Its terms say ceremony bookings include help with "photography management and confetti moment organisation" (terms). The rules that shape the photographs are the ones on confetti, candles and outdoor music.
| Photography during the ceremony | Not published; ask the registrars on the day |
|---|---|
| Own photographer | Not restricted in the published terms; no approved photographer list |
| Flash | Not published |
| Drones | Not published; Clissold Park is a public park, so ask Hackney Council |
| Confetti | Outside only; natural dried petals or plant-based confetti, no rice, no confetti cannons. The terms also exclude fresh rose petals |
| Candles and open flame | No open flames or candles, and no helium balloons |
| Outdoor music | No amplified live music outdoors at Clissold House |
| Noise | 93 dB limit indoors |
| Finish time | Not published; a late licence is available on request. Music and alcohol stop 30 minutes before the licensed cut-off |
Where a rule is shown as not published, ask the venue in writing before the day.
Getting ready for a Clissold House ceremony
No getting-ready room is published for Clissold House. The two second-floor rooms, the Church View Room and the New River Room, each take 20 to 30 people (Clissold House page), and either could be added to a hire as a room to dress in, but this is not offered as standard, so ask. Set-up access is for you and your suppliers only, and your hire window has to include set-up and breakdown (terms). Most couples will get ready at home or nearby and arrive ready for the ceremony slot.

Planning photographs at Clissold House and in the park
- Hackney Venues names the marble fireplaces and the spiral staircase as features of the house (Clissold House page); the staircase suits a full-length portrait and the fireplaces frame a quieter couple picture.
- The front terrace is the natural place for group photographs and the confetti exit, since confetti is only allowed outside.
- Clissold Park itself has lakes, a river and a small herd of fallow deer that has lived there since 1890 (Clissold Park). It is a public park, so portraits there will have members of the public around on a sunny weekend.
- Park closing times change by season, from 5pm in winter to 9.30pm in high summer, so an evening walk for portraits depends on the month.
- No candles are allowed indoors, so plan the evening table details around the room lighting.
An eighteenth-century house restored in 2011
Hackney Venues describes Clissold House as an eighteenth-century mansion house with marble fireplaces and a spiral staircase, recently refurbished (Clissold House page). Hackney Council lists it as Grade II* and says it was renovated in 2011 as part of an £8.9 million Heritage Lottery Fund restoration project; the park itself opened in 1889 and has held a Green Flag award since 2006 (Clissold Park). The two sources differ on the listing grade, so treat Grade II* from the council as the more specific figure.
Stoke Newington, Canonbury and the Church Street buses
Hackney Council gives the address as Clissold House, off Church Street and Green Lanes, N16 9HJ (Clissold Park). The park has entrances from Stoke Newington Church Street, Green Lanes, Queen Elizabeth's Walk and Lordship Terrace. The Clissold Park User Group's visitor page lists Stoke Newington and Canonbury as the nearest Overground stations, each about 15 to 20 minutes' walk, with buses 73, 393 and 476 on Stoke Newington Church Street and 141, 341 and 393 on Green Lanes (visiting the park). We travel to Stoke Newington from our Northwood Hills studio; any travel cost is set out in your written quote.
Parking near Clissold House: supplier bays only
There is no guest parking at Clissold House and no public car park inside Clissold Park; on-street parking around the park is limited and controlled. Hackney Venues has two supplier bays at Clissold House, blue badge parking has to be arranged with your coordinator in advance, and its FAQ mentions free parking on Cazenove Road after 12pm (FAQs). Ask your coordinator which bay your photographer and florist should use.
