Yes, and at home rather than anywhere else. A newborn session is arranged round feeding and sleep, so it moves when the baby moves and we allow a long window for it. Warmth decides whether it works at all, so the heating goes up well before we arrive. Older brothers and sisters are easiest photographed first, then released.
Of course, and we encourage it. When Southall families come to us, parents are very much in the pictures, not just watching from the side. We photograph the group, then smaller sets and each child alone, so no cuddle or combination is ever missed.

A family session at Osterley Park gets planned around two habits of an estate that a recreation ground does not have: it cuts some of its grass and lets the rest grow, and it opens at a set hour. Grass first. Long parkland grass reaches the chest of a two-year-old, so a toddler who walks into it vanishes and every picture becomes a head in a field. The mown ground is where the small ones work. For a seven-year-old that same long grass is the best thing on the estate, worth being sent into and photographed coming back out of, and a family with both ages in it needs those two pieces of ground inside the same half hour. Now the hour. Taking the first slot of the day buys low light and an estate that is nearly empty, which counts for more here than on a big open common where you can simply walk away from other people. The catch is dew. Parkland grass stays soaked until the sun has been on it a while, so the opening part of a session belongs on the paths and the cut ground, and the long grass earns its turn later, once things have dried. Boots for the children, and something sensible for whoever is carrying the baby. If the rain sets in, or if the youngest has spent their patience already, the Northwood room is warm and dry and we would rather use it than salvage a wet morning. Our studio is at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU, about 6 miles from Southall. Passport and ID photos are taken and printed while you wait with no appointment needed, and printing, framing, restoration and scanning are all handled in house. Opening hours are Mon to Sat 10:30 to 18:00, Sun 13:00 to 18:00.
