We work in short spells with gaps between them, because a young child's willingness is finite and spending it on walking leaves none for the pictures. Arranged frames go first and the running-about ones follow, once everyone has relaxed.
There is no standing to attention. We set up a situation and photograph what happens inside it. You receive the whole edited set rather than a chosen dozen, sized for screens and for printing, so one child can be pulled out and framed on their own years afterwards.

Young children are given time and a bit of play, so the camera is soon forgotten. Newborn sessions go slowly and gently, with the baby kept warm and settled from start to finish.
Maternity portraits can be taken in the studio or outdoors, calm and flattering either way. Grandparents, older siblings, the family dog or a favourite toy are all welcome, though Ealing Council asks that dogs stay out of fenced children's play areas in its parks.

Ealing Council keeps dogs out of fenced children's play areas, so if the family dog comes along it would be photographed on open grass while the children have the play area to themselves.
- Northala Fields on Kensington Road, Northolt, opened in 2008 across 27.5 hectares created using waste from the original Wembley Stadium and the White City shopping centre, has four conical mounds, the tallest 22 metres high with views to central London, plus fishing lakes and two playgrounds. 1
- Pitzhanger Manor was the country house of the architect Sir John Soane, who bought it in 1800 and rebuilt it between 1800 and 1804, keeping one wing added by George Dance in 1768. 2
- Brent Lodge Park and Churchfields at the end of Church Road, Hanwell, bordered by the River Brent, have playgrounds, a millennium maze, an animal centre, hay meadows and a Grade II listed stable block. 3
- Dean Gardens on Uxbridge Road in West Ealing, formerly Ealing Dean Common, was used as allotments until 1909, when residents petitioned for a park, and now has two play areas. 4

Yes. The usual window is the last couple of months, when the shape is unmistakable and walking is still comfortable. Please tell us as early in the day as you are able. Children get ill and have off days, and a rearranged session is always better than photographing a child who is unhappy. We will then move the session to another date, whether it was planned for Walpole Park or the studio.

Yes, and it is worth arranging deliberately rather than as an afterthought. Tell us who is coming at the point of booking, so the order can be planned: the full group early, then each generation, then the children by themselves. In Ealing we keep everything inside a short, level distance and stay within reach of seating, so nobody who tires easily has to walk between setups.
That is completely normal and nothing to worry about. Tears, wriggling and surprise naps are all planned for. We stop, let your baby settle and start again, so a difficult first ten minutes rarely shows in the finished pictures.

Formally planted ground is easier on a family than open parkland, and the first reason is underfoot. Land laid out around a house is given made paths, because visitors were meant to walk a route rather than cross a field, and a made path takes a pram without anyone lifting it over wet grass. Walpole Park's listed layout keeps those routes where they were put. The second reason is sightlines. That is the whole trick with a four-year-old, whose willingness is measured in a small number of minutes and gets spent on walking if you allow it. Grandparents benefit from the same arithmetic, since nothing has to be crossed and a bench is never far from wherever we are working. When the weather is genuinely against it, or when a baby's day runs on feeds rather than on daylight, the room in Northwood is the sensible substitute rather than the disappointing one.

Bringing the family to the Northwood studio
From Ealing the studio is roughly 8 miles away, at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU, with Northwood Hills the nearest station. Booked family sessions take place there, alongside passport and ID photos and in-house printing, framing, restoration and digitising. Opening times are Monday to Saturday 10:30 to 18:00 and Sunday 13:00 to 18:00.
