We work in short bursts with breaks built in, since small children give roughly ten good minutes at a time before they need to run somewhere. Nobody is asked to hold a pose for an hour.
Everyone is photographed alone as well as together, so the set has a single portrait of each child, one of the parents, and the whole group. Files come ready to print at wall size. A smaller web set goes out at the same time for relatives who only ever look on a phone.

Fryent Country Park runs to 103 hectares of rolling fields, and with small children that scale is a liability as much as an asset. The cooperative part of a family session is short and it arrives at the beginning, not after a long walk in; a toddler carried across two fields to reach a chosen spot has already spent the goodwill the pictures needed. So we work close to wherever the group starts and let the ground come to us, rather than marching everyone off to a view. Rolling is the word to take seriously. Slopes are hard work behind a pram and harder for a grandparent who would rather stand than be posed on damp grass, and open field ground can stay soft after rain while surfaced paths dry more quickly. If someone in the group has only a few hundred metres of walking in them, say so before the day, and we plan the frames around that limit instead of discovering it halfway through. There is one thing slopes give back. Standing a family slightly downhill of the camera puts the background above them and turns a busy field into clean sky, which is the simplest way to get a group of five or six clear of everybody else in shot. Indoors the light does not shift between frames, a child let loose has nowhere to run to, and the session can stop and restart when a two-year-old needs five minutes.
