A borough that contains a stadium seating 90,000 people does not have an ordinary commercial calendar. The work that hangs off a venue of that size, hospitality, catering, security, logistics, the businesses that serve a crowd arriving and leaving inside a few hours, runs to peaks, and the quiet week is the week to photograph in. On a date when the ground is full everything in the area takes longer, ourselves included, so we would rather shoot around those days than through them. Premises are the usual problem, which is to say the lighting is mixed. Most working interiors combine daylight from one aspect with overhead lamps of a different colour, and a camera set for either renders the other wrong, faces going green under one set of tubes and orange under the next. We bring our own light and overpower what is already there rather than trying to balance the two, which costs a few minutes at set-up and saves the whole set from a colour cast that no amount of correction fully clears. The requirement that catches companies out is consistency rather than quality. A team photographed across Wembley, Willesden and Kingsbury in different rooms will not match unless the setup is deliberately repeated: same distance, same camera height, same background tone, same lens. We write those numbers down on the first visit, so that whoever joins in six months can be added later without the row of faces on the website looking like two different companies.
