We work out which side of it belongs to us before the priest begins, because once families settle there is no crossing without walking through the ceremony. The jaimala outruns every other item on your running order, and a camera still deciding on framing has already missed it.

The pheras repeat, and repetition is the trap: seven circuits photographed identically give you one photograph you happen to own seven copies of. We change height, distance and who the frame is about between each one. Kanyadaan and the sindoor are quiet by comparison and easy to shoot flat, so we light for the faces rather than the gesture. The vidaai gets the same care late on, when everyone including the camera is tired. Earlier, the haldi wants distance and a long lens rather than any lighting at all, because the moment turns the second a camera is noticed.
