It is the least controllable stretch of the morning and by far the most sociable, so we shoot it loose and close rather than posed. Inside, the anand karaj sets its own terms: ambient light only, one position held throughout, a long lens, plus the discipline to stay put.
Everything in that room defers to Guru Granth Sahib. The frame therefore gets built outward from wherever standing is allowed rather than from where the picture would ideally sit. Four laavan look alike from one fixed spot, which is why we vary what the frame is about instead of where it comes from: the palla, the hands, the faces of people watching. The doli closes it, and that one wants distance. Langar afterwards is where a camera stops being noticed at all, which makes it the honest set.
