Two halves of an Anand Karaj day from South Ruislip

You are asking one photographer to solve two unrelated problems in a single day. The first building cannot be altered by us in any respect: it gets photographed as it stands, from wherever standing is permitted, with not one watt added. The other one is a hired space where every decision remains open, except that six hours have gone by and the daylight with them. Those are opposite disciplines, with no gap allowed at the changeover.

What we would settle in advance is the seam. Cars, a doli, a gap for eating, and the moment when one of us needs to be standing in the evening room, finding out what its ceiling does before any guest walks in. Write that half hour into the schedule and the reception stops being a scramble. We would be at the reception venue ahead of the arrivals for exactly that reason.

Milni at the doors, kirtan in the hall, the four laavan

Indoors the constraints are fixed and knowable before arrival: no artificial light at all, a raised platform, a defined patch of floor for whoever carries a camera, and a musical programme whose length nobody controls. Four laavan mark the fixed points. Every circuit finishes where it started, so a static camera hands you one composition four times over. We cross the floor and change height between circuits instead.

Milni is the other reason to arrive early. It happens outdoors, in daylight, in a crowd, and it finishes in minutes; garlands go on and come off while two sets of relatives work out who is greeting whom. That wants a second position rather than a second lens, so our attention splits across the line instead of following one pair along it. Palla and the kirtan sit in a quieter register by comparison, and get worked from a distance that keeps them there.

Reading the sangat, a beat ahead

Anticipating things is largely pattern recognition. Ragis finish a shabad, the sangat shifts; a hand goes out for the palla and a parent rises. Those signals beat any printed schedule, which is why our lenses tend to be pointed correctly a beat early, not spinning towards a noise that has already ended.

Do your packages include a pre-wedding or engagement shoot?+

Some do, and otherwise it is added on request. The session earns its keep beyond the pictures: self-consciousness gets spent in that hour instead of on the wedding morning.

Do we need a second photographer for a Sikh wedding in South Ruislip?+

Not automatically. The extra camera earns its money where two parts of the day overlap in separate rooms, or where a hall runs deep enough that one end cannot be seen from the other. You decide on it; we do not assume it.

What if you have never worked at our gurdwara before?+

That is usually the case, and none of it worries us. We turn up early, walk the floor, learn which positions are acceptable to stand in, and ask the sewadars what they would like from us. Buildings vary; the courtesies do not.

Are you able to work without flash near the Guru Granth Sahib?+

Yes. Nothing we carry gets fired anywhere inside that hall. Fast primes plus a sensor holding together far up the sensitivity range cover it. Grain is preferable to pushing a burst of light into a moment of prayer.

Can you capture the kirtan and the atmosphere inside the darbar hall?+

Yes, and quietly. Musicians get worked from one side at a focal length that keeps a lens out of anyone's eyeline, and the room itself is worth photographing: high windows, the run of the carpet, the way a full sangat fills the floor.
