South Ruislip is residential, and commercial photography that comes out of a residential suburb has a shape of its own: sole traders, small firms in a unit or a shopfront, and people running a business from a converted room rather than a floor of a tower. That has two consequences for planning. The first is access. Premises out towards the A40 tend to face a service road or a yard, which is useful for getting cases out of a vehicle and poor as a background, so exteriors get photographed from across the approach on a long lens to compress what stands behind them. The second is light. A small room with one window and a fitting overhead hands you two sources that disagree about colour, and both are in the wrong position: the ceiling one lights hair and leaves eyes dark, while the window quits as soon as the sky does. We kill the room lights and build what we need from stands, which takes a few minutes and fixes both problems together. Consistency is what a team page lives or dies by, so the room used, the distances and the power settings are noted while we are standing in it. Somebody taken on later can then be photographed to match, and the new face slots into the row without the join showing. That matters more in a suburb like this than in a large office, because hiring here happens in ones and twos over a year.
