The A40 runs close to South Ruislip, which settles the first question of any dog session before another one is asked: where a lead can safely be unclipped. Nowhere within earshot of that road, whatever the recall is like on a good day. The ground for loose frames is the woodland north of the town, and even there it is worth reading the signs at the entrance, because a national nature reserve is designated for what lives in it and what is permitted can differ from one part to another. Our default is a long line, kept slack, running out of shot and painted out afterwards. Coat colour then does more to a woodland session than the weather does. The same broken canopy light that suits a mid brown terrier turns a black coat into a patchwork of blown highlights and holes with no fur in between, and nothing done later puts that back. So a dark dog gets an overcast sky or the hour before sunset, metered for the coat with the background left to go pale, and worked at the woodland margin rather than beneath the trees. A dog whose back legs have stopped enjoying long walks, or one that reacts to strangers, is better photographed at home and in the garden if there is one, with no walk at the start of it and no other dogs arriving mid frame.
