We work for as long as the animal will give us and stop when the interest goes, not when a shot list says so. Treats stay in your pocket, and the toy that actually works stays hidden until the moment it is needed.

A bouncy puppy and an elderly cat need quite different handling, so we match our pace to whichever animal is in front of us.

Cats and rabbits we do indoors at your address instead. Mention the coat colour at the booking, because a black dog and a pale one want opposite weather.
Mostly with calm and patience. We move slowly, talk quietly and let the animal set the pace, using treats and play rather than pressure. An anxious cat or dog often settles faster in the studio, where only one animal is booked at a time and nothing outside can distract it.
As long as the animal stays interested, which is usually shorter than owners expect and quite enough. We plan the order rather than the clock: the garden or the house first while the dog is settled, then the woodland edge for anything involving running, then we stop. An older or nervous animal gets the whole session at home instead.
Plenty of dogs will not, and it rarely matters. We go along with a lively dog's energy and catch its personality in the pauses between games. On open ground such as Pinn Meadows we would also try some running and leaping shots, once Hillingdon Council's permission for professional photos in its green spaces has been cleared through the Hillingdon Film Office. A great portrait does not depend on a dog holding still.
Yes, and the same visit should cover both. An interwar back garden works better for this than it looks. Photographed along its length instead of across it, the fences fall outside the frame and there is real distance behind the group, which keeps the background quiet. The dog stays on a line held by somebody standing just out of shot.

Roots under leaf litter are unkind to an older dog that has gone stiff behind, and for that animal a session is better spent in the garden and on the quiet residential streets outside it, moving at whatever pace it sets, with the camera brought down to its height instead of the dog brought up to ours.
