Coat colour settles more here than the choice of location does, and the local ground makes that harder rather than easier. A closed summer canopy produces close to the worst possible light for a dark dog: the shade beneath it is deep enough that a black or liver coat collapses into an outline, while the gaps where sun does get through are several stops brighter than everything around them, and no single exposure holds both ends. A grey, overcast day at the edge of the trees solves it in one move. The entire sky turns into one source, the range collapses, and a dark coat keeps the detail along the muzzle and down the spine that makes it read as fur rather than as a shape. Pale dogs suffer the reverse and want the same weather for the opposite reason. The next thing to settle is whether the dog comes off the lead at all, and inside a national nature reserve that is not purely a recall question: the designation exists for what lives there, so we plan on a long line unless you tell us the ground and the animal both allow otherwise. Footing matters as well. Roots under leaf litter are unkind to an older dog that has gone stiff behind, and for that animal a session is better spent in the garden and on the quiet residential streets outside it, moving at whatever pace it sets, with the camera brought down to its height instead of the dog brought up to ours.
