Two things decide a family session in Ruislip Manor, and the forecast is neither of them. The first is that a woodland floor is a woodland floor: unsurfaced, laced with roots and covered in leaf litter that hides exactly where those roots are. A pram will not roll on it, and a relative who watches their footing spends the session looking at the ground instead of the lens. The second is darkness. Ancient woodland in full leaf takes most of the light out before it reaches anybody, and a dim scene forces a slow shutter, which is incompatible with a three-year-old. So from late spring to the middle of autumn the sensible plan puts a family on open ground at the boundary of the trees and keeps the wood behind them as scenery. The location people underrate is their own garden. Interwar plots are long and narrow with a fence down either side, which makes a poor background across the width and a good one along the length: stand at one end, photograph towards the other, and the fences fall outside the frame while there is real distance behind the group. It is also the only ground where a child whose patience has gone is already at home, with lunch and a sofa in the next room.

Family sittings at our Northwood studio, two miles from Ruislip Manor
The studio is at 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU, roughly two miles from Ruislip Manor, and Northwood Hills on the Metropolitan line is the nearest station. Family sittings are booked in advance there, and printing, framing, restoration and scanning of old family photographs are all done in house. Family sittings at Northwood can be booked from 10:30 to 18:00, Monday to Saturday, and on Sunday afternoons from 13:00 until 18:00.
