In the interwar houses here that generally means the front bay window, which holds more daylight than anywhere else indoors. The older children get their turn first, before novelty wears off, then join the baby.

Two things decide a family session in Ruislip Manor, and the forecast is neither of them. The first is that a woodland floor is a woodland floor: unsurfaced, laced with roots and covered in leaf litter that hides exactly where those roots are. A pram will not roll on it, and a relative who watches their footing spends the session looking at the ground instead of the lens. The second is darkness. Ancient woodland in full leaf takes most of the light out before it reaches anybody, and a dim scene forces a slow shutter, which is incompatible with a three-year-old. So from late spring to the middle of autumn the sensible plan puts a family on open ground at the boundary of the trees and keeps the wood behind them as scenery. That reverses in winter, when the canopy is off and light reaches the ground properly, except that the same months leave the ground holding water, so a winter session there becomes a footwear conversation first. The location people underrate is their own garden. Interwar plots are long and narrow with a fence down either side, which makes a poor background across the width and a good one along the length: stand at one end, photograph towards the other, and the fences fall outside the frame while there is real distance behind the group. It is also the only ground where a child whose patience has gone is already at home, with lunch and a sofa in the next room.
