The session moves in blocks: everybody together, then each household, then the children by themselves, then whatever charging about is left over. Chairs or a low wall are part of the plan, since standing still is what tires older relatives fastest. The running order goes out beforehand, so nobody is guessing when they arrive.
An hour is usually plenty. Group frames come back fully retouched, the rest lightly corrected, with print sized files included in the set.

Probably not, and that is fine. Busy toddlers are welcome, and we would never ask one to sit still on command. We turn it into a game and photograph what happens, which is usually where the best pictures come from.
The whole family frame is arranged, because a dozen people cannot arrange themselves. Everything after it comes from prompts rather than positions: walk to the bench, tell them what you were told not to repeat. Children are given a job instead of an instruction to smile. Outdoors, that would mean a short route with something to do at each end of it.
Both, and it is worth deciding early. Outdoors near Edgware, Canons Park is the obvious choice, with its lakes and walled garden as backdrops. The Northwood room is better with a newborn, with an elderly relative who cannot stand for long, or in January when nobody enjoys it outside. Say which you would prefer when you enquire and we will hold the alternative in case of weather.
It marks a first birthday: your little one gets a cake of their own to prod, squash and taste. We catch the first cautious poke, the full-handed mess and the delighted faces that follow. Expect mess, laughter and plenty of cake on the floor, which is exactly the point.
Within the first two weeks is best, while a newborn is at their sleepiest and settles most easily for posing. Getting in touch during pregnancy helps, as we can pencil in a provisional date around the due date and adjust it once the baby arrives.

The thing that decides an Edgware family session is its order, not its location. Where three or four generations turn up together, the group is at its most cooperative in the opening fifteen minutes and never comes back to that state, so the picture containing everybody is taken first, before coats come off and before anyone has been asked to do the same thing twice. In January, or with a baby only a few weeks old, the Northwood room beats every outdoor option available: warm, level, windless, and entirely indifferent to what the sky is doing.

Visiting the studio from Edgware
From Edgware, the studio at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU is about 6 miles away, and we do not charge for travel when we come to you instead. Family and newborn sittings there are by appointment, and the same studio handles printing, framing, restoration and digitising. We are open from 10:30 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday and from 13:00 to 18:00 on Sundays, which suits weekend family sittings.
Each family session is photographed by Kaushik Bathia in person, a Fellow of the BIPP and the MPA who opened the Northwood studio in 2001 and has five European Kodak Gold Awards.
