Edgware station is the northern end of the Northern line's Edgware branch, a direct line into central London for anyone who works there. A terminus is where trains begin, so they begin empty, and that is the small mercy which makes a daily journey into central London sustainable. It also means the finished photograph frequently has to live on a company page beside people photographed by whoever head office happens to use. Matching that is a technical exercise rather than an artistic one. What has to match is narrower than most people expect. Where the eyes sit in the frame, how much room is left above the crown, whether the wall behind reads lighter or darker than the skin, and how hard the shadow under the nose falls. Get those four close and a picture simply belongs; get them wrong and a technically better photograph looks like an intruder in the row. If a firm has issued a template, the useful response is to copy it rather than improve on it. The other half of the work is people trading on their own account, a practice or a consultancy or a partnership of two, where no template exists and the picture is doing the introducing. That brief runs warmer and a fraction wider, with some suggestion of a room behind rather than a plain sweep, because somebody choosing a professional is looking for approachable before polished. Both versions come out of one half hour if we agree at the outset which of them is the priority.
