Stanmore's open spaces and its nature reserves look like a single choice on a map and behave like two entirely different ones on the day, and for a family the deciding factor is what lies underfoot rather than how the place photographs. A reserve is managed for what lives in it rather than for footfall, so the going through one is usually unmade and slow to dry; a pram sinks, a toddler goes over, and the session is finished before it has properly started. The open spaces give better going and room to spread out, and that is where anything younger than school age belongs. The country park charges a climb before it pays anything, which is worth saying out loud. A four year old spends most of a session's patience getting to the top of a hill. Stand the tallest people slightly below the shortest and heads level themselves out with nobody perched on a wall or asked to crouch, so three generations fit one row and all of them look like they belong in it. When the reserves are soaked, or an afternoon has gone dark early, the Northwood room does that job under a roof, warm, on a floor a baby can be set down on.
