Children's ages decide the sequence, so send them with the booking. An hour is reserved, though the productive stretch is usually over inside thirty minutes, so the important frames are dealt with first. Nobody has to rehearse anything beforehand, since the running order lives with us rather than with you.
One gallery goes to everybody who came, so grandparents and absent aunts receive the identical set instead of a forwarded screenshot. Files arrive sized for printing and sized for sending on, plus mono conversions where they earn it.

With small children timing matters most, so we book around naps and feeds, not around a tidy diary slot. Toddlers have roughly twenty good minutes in them, so the group frames are taken first and anything experimental happens afterwards with whatever patience remains.

Yes, and late on they are easier indoors. Northwood means warmth, a chair between frames and no trek from a car, which counts for more at thirty six weeks than scenery does. Outdoors is still possible: Byron Recreation Ground is level throughout with nothing to climb, so a short session close to the gate works. Newborn sittings afterwards are usually done at your home.
Agree on a few shades that sit together instead of matching outfits, and keep them mid weight against grass. At Byron Recreation Ground the background is green and the playground beyond it is bright, so strong primaries on people end up competing with the equipment. Flat shoes for everyone: the turf stays damp well after rain and children will be sitting on it.
About an hour is usual, though we never work to a stopwatch. With a newborn or toddler along, we allow extra time for feeds, naps and cuddles. The children decide the pace, and we go with it.
They do not need to. Instead of asking a toddler to sit and smile, we turn the session into play, perhaps near the playground at Byron Recreation Ground, and photograph what happens. Children busy being themselves often give the best pictures of all.

The playground at Byron Recreation Ground is why a family session there works, and why it falls apart if it is run in the wrong order. Bright equipment beats an adult holding a camera for a four year old's attention every time, and once it has been spotted it cannot be unspotted. So anything requiring everybody to face one way happens on the grass first, while the swings are still unnoticed, and the playground is then used for what it genuinely is: the stretch where the performing stops and ordinary behaviour resumes. Those frames are the ones nobody deletes. Playing fields help with the dull practicalities too. Level ground and short grass count for more to a pram, to a grandparent with no appetite for a march across a field, and to anybody unsteady, than an attractive backdrop ever does, and there is no long approach to negotiate with a toddler on the way in or the way out. Two things are worth settling beforehand. If the pitches are in use we work the quieter side of the ground and keep the camera low, so the background reads as grass and sky rather than a match in progress. And in winter open turf holds water, so a session that would mean wet knees for the small ones is better moved to Northwood, where the sky is irrelevant and the youngest can be photographed before patience runs out.

Our Northwood studio, 4 miles from Wealdstone
The studio at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU is about 4 miles from Wealdstone, a short trip even with a car full of children and a change of clothes. Family sessions are booked in advance, and prints, frames, restoration and scanning are all handled at the studio. Studio family sittings run between 10:30 and 18:00 from Monday to Saturday and from 13:00 on Sunday, and a late-morning slot leaves room for a toddler's nap afterwards.
Whether you come to Northwood or we meet in Wealdstone, Kaushik Bathia, FBIPP and FMPA, photographs your family himself; he opened the studio in 2001 and has five European Kodak Gold Awards to his name.
