For a family group the choice between Greenford's two obvious pieces of ground is settled by the smallest and the oldest people coming, not by which looks better. Horsenden Hill is a hill, and a hill has to be climbed before anybody is photographed. A four year old who has walked up one arrives with a good part of their patience already spent, and a grandparent who has done the same is thinking about their knees rather than the camera. Ravenor Park is level, it is the largest park in Greenford, and level ground with room in it is what a pram, a bag of spare clothes and three generations of one family actually need. We would start there unless there is a specific reason not to. The order of a session matters as much as the place. The picture with everybody in it is the hardest to get and the one most likely to be framed, so it is taken at the start, while the youngest child is still curious about what is happening. After that the group breaks down into smaller combinations, which are quicker and more forgiving, and the last stretch is loose: walking, carrying, children doing whatever they were going to do anyway. Weather changes the plan rather than cancelling it. Small children in the wet stop cooperating fast, and an open park is a poor place to discover that, so when the forecast is genuinely bad we move the whole thing to Northwood and photograph indoors, where the light holds steady and nobody is negotiating with a hood.
