Prime lenses with wide apertures do the heavy lifting inside a dim mandap, so we can photograph the ceremony by whatever light the room already has rather than by repeated bursts of flash. During emotional moments like the vidaai we lower the camera between frames, staying human and unobtrusive, then quietly lifting it again for the moments that matter. For group and family portraits we work briskly and warmly, gathering people with a light touch so nobody stands around waiting and the celebration keeps its momentum.

What happens beneath the mandap

The bride's arrival under a phoolon ki chadar, the canopy of flowers carried by her brothers, moves steadily down the aisle, and we walk backwards ahead of it to keep her face lit. We photograph the seven pheras around the sacred fire closely but unobtrusively, following the vows and the quiet glances between you as the priest leads each round of the ritual. We photograph the kanyadaan and the hastamelap as one flowing sequence, holding the giving of the hand and the binding of the union so the story of the ritual stays whole.

Welcome dinners are relaxed and badly lit in equal measure, and we work them gently so the arrivals, the introductions and the older relatives are recorded without a camera dominating the room. We photograph the sangeet dances close enough to feel the energy, catching the missed steps and the triumphant finishes that make the family performances so loved. The garba and raas ask us to keep moving, and we do, photographing the whirl of the dandiya and the colour of the outfits without ever slowing the energy down.
