Enclosure is the whole argument for photographing a family inside the walled garden at Eastcote House Gardens. A two year old who runs has somewhere to run to and nowhere to run out of, and that changes the adults more than it changes the child. Nobody is half watching an exit, so shoulders drop and the pictures stop looking supervised. The structured planting also gives small people something to do, and a child with a job in a frame is a child who has forgotten about the camera. The same walls cost you the big group shot. Getting nine people across the frame needs the camera some way back, and inside a boundary there is nowhere to retreat to, so the wide one with grandparents seated belongs on the open green rather than among the beds. That picture is worth taking early, before the youngest has had enough of standing about, and the walls are better saved for the pairs and the loose frames where shelter actually earns something. Ground and season matter for anyone bringing a pram or a relative who would rather not be walked far. Firm paths and short hops between backgrounds make a session workable where wet grass would not. Winter is the honest limit. A leafy suburb in December is bare and dim well before the afternoon ends, and small children lose interest faster in the cold. That is the point at which our Northwood room does the job better, with warmth, a light that does not change and no weather to negotiate with.
