Planning a Hindu wedding around Eastcote

Most of the morning happens somewhere small. A family home gives you rooms of a fixed size, often one window apiece and a low ceiling, so a Ganesh puja, and later the haldi, get photographed from a doorway or a corner rather than from anywhere comfortable. We shoot wide there and bounce light off a pale ceiling wherever there is one. The point is that nobody has to move to make the picture work.

A baraat along suburban streets is a different problem again. There is no processional avenue in Eastcote, only kerbs and parked cars, so the arrival needs a short agreed route and someone walking ahead of it. We would rather know the last hundred yards in advance than discover them with a drum already going. Guests arriving by Underground reach Zone 5 on either the Metropolitan or the Piccadilly, which spreads their arrival over a wider window than a coach would.

Agni, jaimala and the seven pheras

An indoor flame at noon is our hardest technical problem. Window light arrives blue; agni burns orange; set a havan between the two and the frame argues with itself. So we pick a winner, gel to it, and light the pheras from one side, since a canopy roof absorbs whatever gets sent upward. Before a mandap position is fixed, ask how open flame must be contained in that room, and whether the house lighting can be dropped.

Two moments demand opposite methods. A jaimala is fast, unrehearsed and usually above head height, which means a low fixed position and a shutter already running before it begins. Then come seven passes around the flame. Seven identical pictures are no coverage at all, so we move between passes, changing side, changing height, changing lens, until the sequence builds rather than repeats. One camera stays on the parents throughout, because kanyadaan happens on faces, not hands.
