For dogs, Eastcote House Gardens offers walled ground for the nervous and more open space for the ones that need to run. Cats, rabbits and smaller pets are better photographed at home, where they are calmest.
Bring the food they genuinely care about rather than the daily biscuit. The final ten frames of any session are bought with something better than usual, and a dog that has already switched off will not come back for anything ordinary once the novelty has worn off.

How a pet session runs
Most of a session is over inside the first half hour, because that is about how long a dog stays interested in a stranger holding a camera. We stay on foot, low down, and let the animal set the speed.
You get the frames where it looks like itself rather than arranged, colour corrected, with any safety lead painted out afterwards so the picture does not advertise it. Nothing about the animal itself is altered, since a tidied dog stops looking like your dog.

No. An energetic dog photographs better than a flat one, provided the running happens first instead of being suppressed. Somewhere enclosed, where the rules allow a dog off the lead, lets it get the first burst out of its system, and the frames worth keeping usually arrive once it has stopped checking the gate and started watching us.
Yes. We are based in Northwood, HA6, and cover Eastcote along with Ruislip Manor, Rayners Lane and Northwood Hills on the same basis. For pets that is usually the right way round anyway. An animal photographed at home, or on ground it walks daily, behaves far better than one taken somewhere unfamiliar an hour beforehand.
Almost nothing. A walk beforehand takes the edge off an excitable dog, and one that has not just eaten works harder for treats. Bring a favourite toy and let your animal simply be itself. Leave the patience and timing to us.
More so, if anything. Older animals hold still, which is the hard part with a young dog. Eastcote House Gardens suits them because the enclosed section is compact, so a stiff dog is not asked to cover ground to reach a background. We photograph from their eye level instead of standing over them, and stop the moment interest goes.
We love to. Those early weeks pass fast, and a session at home in Eastcote records them before they go. Sessions stay short and playful, and the youngster is allowed to wander so its character comes through.

Our Northwood studio is roughly 1.6 miles from Eastcote, so home visits there are straightforward. It sits close to Pinner and Hatch End, which we cover too. Pet sessions can take place at the studio, at home or outdoors in Eastcote, travel there is not charged, and for a council park Hillingdon's permission for professional photos comes first.
In Hillingdon, paid dog walkers need a council licence and may walk up to six dogs at a time in the borough's green spaces, so for a nervous animal we would pick a quieter hour. Beyond the gardens, Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve on Reservoir Road holds ancient oak and hornbeam woodland, which we would suggest for a dog that loves a woodland walk. The Grade II listed Eastcote station, a Charles Holden design, makes a well-known local backdrop for an owner-and-dog portrait.

If you would rather come to us, the studio is at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU. Pet and portrait sessions at the studio are booked ahead. Pet owners are welcome to call in between 10:30 and 18:00, Monday to Saturday, and 13:00 to 18:00 on Sundays.
