Coat colour dictates more of a pet session in Stanmore than the choice of location does, and the country park's open aspect is why. On high ground the background is sky, and sky is the brightest thing a camera meets all day. A black or liver dog placed in front of it comes back as an edge with nothing inside the edge, and no quantity of lifting afterwards restores the eyes. There are two ways out. Swing the dog round so the sky sits behind us instead of behind it, or drop the camera until the horizon runs above the head and the background becomes ground rather than air. The slope repays the walk for a second reason. Standing a couple of steps downhill puts the lens level with a dog's chest without any kneeling in whatever the grass is holding, and frames made from there read as portraits rather than as pictures taken looking down at a pet. Stanmore's reserves make up the rest of the town, and they come with conditions of their own. A reserve is managed for whatever lives in it, so what a dog may do there is decided by the notice on the gate and not by us; plan on a walk in company rather than a run, and the pictures follow from that. Nervous animals and elderly ones do better at home in any case, on their own floor, where the only unfamiliar thing in the room is us and one light we carried in.
